It been a while since my last post and I am looking forward to the days ahead of talking some more about some of the important things that I learned while on my extended Sabbath Rest. But before I get to that I can't think of a better way to break the silence than with a big shout out to my Mom and Dad on the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. I was getting my hair cut on Friday and talking to my "hair stylist" about yesterday (Saturday October 25) and the anniversary party we were having for my Mom and Dad. She was amazed that someone could be married to one other person for 50 years. 50 years is quite the accomplishment these days.
Here is what I walked away with yesterday:
My Mom and Dad love their friends. All Mom and Dad wanted to do for their 50th was throw a party for a couple hundred of their friends. They didn't want the time to be solely focused on them but they did want to let their friends have a great time together.
My Dad and Mom are unique, one of a kind. I can't tell you the number of times I had to explain to people that yes we are celebrating my parents 50th anniversary and yes we are doing it by renting an entire 5 pin bowling facility. By the way it was not my idea, it was my mother's and yes it was an absolute blast.
My Mom and Dad have positively impacted all different kinds of people. The bowling alley was packed with individuals from different generations and cultures. Some of my friends from church youth days were there. I saw some "very mature" friends of my parents - some of them past Sunday School teachers, young families, and co-workers, relatives.
My Dad and Mom are always worth celebrating but even more so after 50 years of loving commitment with each other. What an amazing example to follow. In our day of seemingly disposable relationships there are couples making the good choice to stay together. I say we celebrate that. So here is a shout out to my Mom and Dad. Congrats Bill and Joan, Uncle Bill and Auntie Joan. Thanks for the heritage of life well lived.
